A Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Guide: Have Fun, Stay Safe, and Avoid Legal Trouble

Kansas City knows how to throw a St. Patrick’s Day party. From the downtown parade to the legendary Snake Saturday in North Kansas City, the celebrations here are as good as it gets. Whether you’re starting the day with an Irish breakfast at Browne’s, joining the crowds in Westport, or checking out the unofficial pub crawl downtown, one thing is for sure: KC goes all out for St. Paddy’s. (I will be at the Martin City Parade on Sunday!).

But before that first pint, let’s talk about something important: Missouri takes DUIs very seriously.

DUI Patrols Will Be in Full Force

Law enforcement is well aware that St. Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest drinking days of the year and they are ready for you! Expect increased DUI checkpoints, more patrols, and zero leniency for drunk driving. Even a first offense can mean:

  • Hefty fines
  • A suspended license
  • Possible jail time

And let’s be honest - no one wants to end their night in the back of a squad car instead of at an after-party.

What You Need to Know if You Get Pulled Over

Here are the facts: if you are stopped for DUI, it will always be on your record. Every police officer who pulls you over in the future will see that you’ve had a DUI stop—even if you are later found not guilty. Also, Missouri has strict deadlines associated with license hearings. Once you receive a DUI, contact an attorney immediately.

Another tip: Don’t give the cops any evidence. They can do all of that themselves. You have rights—know them and use them.

How to Stay Safe and Avoid a DUI

The good news? Kansas City makes it easy to get home safely.

  • Use Rideshare Services – Uber and Lyft are everywhere, with designated pickup zones near parade routes.
  •  Plan Your Ride Before You Start Drinking – If you're heading to Shamrocks & Shenanigans at Power & Light or hopping between bars, have a transportation plan in place.
  •  Consider Public Transit – The KC Streetcar is free and a great way to avoid the hassle of parking and driving.
  •  Stay Put – If you’re bar-hopping, book a hotel downtown or crash at a friend’s place.

Enjoy the Festivities—Without the Regrets 🍀

St. Patrick’s Day is about fun, celebration, and community—not legal trouble. Enjoy Snake Saturday, the parades, and all the Irish festivities, but make smart choices when it comes to getting home.

Drink responsibly. Plan ahead. And have a safe & legendary St. Paddy’s in KC!
